Understanding Sleep Logs
When you use the FitBit sleep/activity timer and you sync your sleep or activity record to the FitBit web site, the record will be stored either in your Sleep Log or your Activity Log.
If you are tracking sleep, the record should be stored in the Sleep Log. HOWEVER, it might end up in the Activity Log. So, if you sync your FitBit to the FitBit web site and your sleep record does not show up in your Sleep Log, check the Activity Log. It will most likely be there.
If it is, you can copy the start and stop times from the Activity log to the Sleep log, then delete the record from the Activity log.
If you want to know why this happens, read on.
I am a very light sleeper. And I tend to get up a lot at night because I can't sleep. I also frequently go to bed very late. As a result, the FitBit often interprets my sleep pattern as an activity and stores what I intended to be a sleep record in the Activity log.
This happens because the FitBit One uses an algorithm to determine where a timer record is stored. And if a sleep record is somewhat ambiguous (as mine sometimes are), the algorithm might interpret the log data as an activity rather than sleep.

It's great to have you here @dschwabe! This is really interesting and it's the first time someone actually explained this situation. It does make sense why the tracker registers your movements as an activity. I was wondering though, do you press and hold the tracker's button in order to activate the stop watch? Do you have a compatible mobile device with Fitbit? The reason I ask is because you can also track your sleep using the mobile device instead of the tracker, that way you can get more accurate sleep data.
Give this a try and let me know if this works.
