Fitbit without smartphone

My husband just got his new Fitbit One. He got it all set up and it synced thru our PC. He wants to participate in a challenge today, but joining through the invitation on his email didn't seem to work. He isn't showing up in the challenge. We can't find anything related to challenges on Fitbit Connect. I am hoping that he isn't excluded from challenges by not having a Smartphone. Also, what does he need to sync his steps through PC? Will it take him nearing the Dongle with his tracker or does he actually have to sync his steps manually through the site each day?

I'm afraid challenges only work with the apps and not via the Web interface so they won't be available to your husband.

The One will sync every 20 minutes or so when in range of the dongle so it should not be necessary to manually sync unless you want to see the very latest data on the dashboard.

Hi, @2big , your husband can participate in Challenges if he is able to download the Windows 10 Fitbit app onto his computer.  Otherwise a smartphone is required for Challenges.

I notice you posted from an iPad.  If he doesn't have Windows 10, or a smartphone, if your iPad is generation 3 or higher, he could join challenges using your iPad.  You would need to log out of your account and he could log in and join the challenge.  He would need to log back in when he wants to update his challenge steps.

To answer your other question, when the computer is awake and the dongle plugged in, the dongle should automatically sync any nearby Fitbit approx every 20 minutes.

I hope this helps!

Thank you, Julia. I will try it through my iPad. Somehow I was just afraid that my iPad app would only work with my email address, but I'll give it a try with his after logging out. It is also reassuring and much more user friendly if he can sync without going thru the website each time. I think he's going to enjoy his Fitbit!
