On my phone I prefer to have my location and bluetooth switched off most of the time. I've always synced to my laptop at home before, but finally decided to install the app on my new phone this time. But it required location to complete installation. Can I leave those two features switched off, then switch them on just when I want to see syncing on my phone? That would mostly be if I'm away from home for a little while and going on long walkies. Is this possible or am I wasting my time having fitbit installed to my phone without those permanently switched on? Thanks for your help.

Perfect, thank you. It's not battery life that's the issue with location services for me. I only turn on location when I want to use something like maps. I know where I am, everyone else doesn't need to 😉 .

You only need to have location services and bluetooth enabled on your phone in order to sync your fitbit. It will track quite happily without them and you can use the app to view previously synced data provided you have wifi or data services enabled.
I only switch on bluetooth on my phone to sync but I do leave location services on as I find this doesn't cause much of an impact on my battery life.
