Using app to record exercise results in incorrect step count

I wear my Fitbit continuously.  So my steps are always being counted. I just realized that when I go to the app to record my exercise, like using the treadmill, and fill in all the data such as time, distance and calories burnt it adds more steps to what’s already been counted. Like today, I walked with a friend for an hour. Our step count was around 8000. When I used the app to log it as exercise my step count increased to 1600!  How do I record my exercise without influencing the actual step count?

Use the button to hold it down to start recording. Then when done push the button in again to stop it.

You can rename it after it syncs
