2 days ago the screen on my charge 2 has gone completely black. It's still recording steps and syncing. I've checked previous topics but the advice given there hasn't helped. Does this mean I need a new one?

Welcome to the Fitbit Community, @STA63. I'm sorry to hear your Charge 2 has a black screen and thank you for letting us know that advise given hasn't helped.
Could you please confirm that you have restarted your tracker?:
Your tracker should now work normally. If your tracker still doesn't work after a restart, contact Customer Support.

I've done all the above, well tried several times! The Fitbit will not turn off. When it eventually does charge as soon as I put it back on the battery is dead and the Fitbit will not record steps or anything

I have done all this! The charger says the battery is full when I sync it to my phone but the screen is still black and not tracking
