I have read the forums and I see many of people have the same issue and I don't have solution for it either. I have issue as most of the people here, though I have a few extra things to mention in my case.
First of all my Fitbit spent about couple of months in a drawer. It of course run out of the battery.
Yesterday, I plugged it in and charged - though the screen was black and I thought, well maybe it is because it spent so much in the dark.
As I already had issues with blank screen previously - I tried to restart to get the smiley face - usual procedure. I got a smile and I saw the clock for a bit, but it was super dimmed, like the scree does not have enough power. Well I charged it completely then - did not improve. Started checking what's up. Found that changing clock could help. Tried it - didn't work. Advice to check brightness settings - ok, checked that too, was able to navigate through dimmed screen - it showed Auto, tapped on it to see if I can adjust the brightness aaaand the screen died at that point. Not even dimmed menu. Tried restarting numerous of times, sometimes the Smile appeared but clock didn't appear after that.
Strange. Technically, the tracker works - sends data, vibrates, syncs with app, etc. The only thing - the screen doesn't work properly anymore. So I don't expect any magician to whip their wand and fix it, but maybe, just maybe, this could be a firmware update issue, maybe something that could be patched and fixed? Maybe the development team could take a look into it? Because as a tracker it works, the clock doesn't. I can live without the clock, but when I wear one on my hand I would love it to work.
P.S. Wanted to post this to a related topic, but had no option to. Not even reply worked.

Hello @SyntaxErra
Unfortunately I’ve seen this as a growing issue with other Charge 3 users. I don’t personally have the solution for you but I do know this issue is being discussed here: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Other-Charge-Trackers/How-do-I-adjust-the-brightness-on-my-Charge-3/... and here as well: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Other-Charge-Trackers/Check-here-for-help-with-Charge-3-screen-issue...
I can only advise you to read through those threads and try some of the troubleshooting tips being offered. If there is a solid solution it would/should be forthcoming in those links I provided here.
😉 I hope at least pointing you in the right direction helped in someway
