Fitbit won't go into "sleep" mode when I'm not wearing it.  The green light on the back of the device never goes off so the battery wears out in days. I don't wear it when I sleep.

Have you checked that the "Heart Rate" setting in your device settings at https://www.fitbit.com/settings/device is set to "Auto" rather than "On"?
