Does Charge 4 recognize rowing and track it as such?

No rowing is not step based. It will count steps with arm movement but thats about all

Thanks for the information. I found the best I could do was trick it into
thinking I was I was on an elliptical. The shown calories consumed was
about one quarter of what the rowing machine showed.

I've just got a new Charge4, the first time I have used a fitness tracker. I row regularly, and was very surprised to find that it isn't an option. I'd like to know why rowing isn't recognised. It's a very common exercise, surely the fitbit ought to be able to record it?

It's a workaround, not a solution. Swimming is not a 'steo based activity' yet FitBit tracks it. And marketing says 'stay motivated by tracking your activity'. Whether for rowing or kaaking, a real tracking solution should be provided.

I suspect that the problem is that the Fitbit is essentially a collection of sensors that are tracking motion/acceleration/movement and trying to estimate the exercise based on the data, rowing is a quite limited motion but could probably vary a lot depending on the device that you are rowing on.  I've always just tracked it as "exercise" and see the numbers as a decent estimate of the physical activity ... sure it's not 100% accurate but just calling it "exercise" does allow you to track what you are doing.
