I have also done as above but have had no luck. Can some one who has been successful please advise as I wish to be up and running. The fitbit was a 69th birthday present.

When you say it doesn't work. Does Fitbit Connect give you an indication that it has encountered an error? If so, what does it say?
Note: If you also sync with another device (such as your smartphone), you may want to disable bluetooth on that device because it may interfere with syncing on your computer.
I hope this helps.

Best AnswerSync Now is greyed out and the FitBit Connect program cannot find the dongle which has been sitting in the PC for the past 2 years without any problems.
I too have the "no sync" issue, and I agree, it appears that FitBit no longer supports Windows 7
Maybe if you have that icon in the said customize box. I dont so how do I sync?
