Algorithm for counting laps swimming

Does anyone have a clue as to the algorithm for counting swimming laps?  I don't expect it to count kicked lengths, but i was taken aback when it ended up counting only 1/3 swum laps.  It's not counting strokes is it? I am still, in my dotage, a pretty decent swimmer and depending on the stroke and exhaustion level generally take between 8 to 13-14 strokes/length.  Years ago i had a Speedo swim watch that was incredibly accurate: it counted lengths ...of each stroke ..

pretty much exactly and had interesting metrics such as district per stroke, avg time/per length per stroke., etc,  And did not cost $200.00. I don't think it is counting turns which could work, although it would have to recognize both open and flip turns.  Surely a sensor could recognize the push off a wall?  Imagine my surprise when i found myself taking 6 minutes/lap.

Sorry, can not seem to edit original post.  By 8-13 strokes per length, a 12 stroke lap of free would have 6 strokes with the non-dominant arm.

Same thing happened to me today.

Swam 48 pool lengths, Versa counted only 33. I swam this sequence: backstroke, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle. Repeat.

And I cannot modify the swim details on fitbit.com, I can only delete the swim and manually add a new swim with the correct data.   😞
