Bought a Versa in mid-may. Loved it and it worked perfectly. I have a Pixel XL. One of the reasons I selected this watch was for its notifications for phone and texting. This works for a while and then stops. I have resynced uninstalled, installed, bluetooth on bluetooth off, phone off phone on, factory reset, etc. When I tried these variations in a sequential maner it would work for a day or two and then stop!!! UGH. Called support twice. One time what they suggested work for a day. The last suggestion was a factory reset and it did not help! It's past the 15 days for returning it to Best Buy. My request was to have a replacement, but that has not happened yet. I guess I'll have to call back after the factory reset did not work. I noticed there was a Fitbit update I am scratching my head why ithe VERSA worked so well and NOW Does NOT!

Which Pixel XL version do you have?  A quick Google search showed me that there are multiple XL versions.

However, when checking the "List Of Supported Devices", it appears that only the original Pixel and Pixel XL versions are supported.

Just because it doesn't appear on the list doesn't mean that it's not supported.  My phone isn't on the list and it's supported.  It just means that you won't be able to utilize all the features Fitbit has to offer.

That doesn't mean that your phone won't be there in the future.  With technology growing as quickly as it is, it's almost impossible to keep up with.  Fitbit is constantly testing new phones, so please keep checking!

I had a similar situation like yours. But I have an s7edge and was running on 7.0. I went through 2 versa but each worked well with my phone. Received all notifications and calls. Then my phone got an update to 8.0 and it stopped receiving call notifications. Called support and they couldn’t figure it out so they told me to wait for an update and hopefully it will get fixed. I asked them how long do I have to wait and they said they don’t know. So, I exchanged it for another brand. Wasn’t gonna wait for who knows how long using a $200 device that doesn’t work like how it used to.

I can confirm that android updates break notifications.  The last 2 android notifications have done exactly this.  I would avoid updating when a new android update is available for a little while.
