Getting steps while biking

Over the years I have owned a Blaze, Ionic, and currently Versa. I have ridden a bike for years and have tracked exercise through FitBit app. Never before have I received stepping credit while on a bike ride....until today. I have not changed any settings and gps is always tracking me. Oddly enough, that feature wasn’t working last week and then today I noted almost 12k steps for a 19 mile bike ride. Why did this happen out of nowhere and is there a way to turn this off?
