Steps being added while not moving

I've had me fitbit VERSA for about a week. Yesterday (5-12-18) after sitting through a 2 hr 30 minute movie it had registered just over 9000 steps being taken. Little or no movement by me. Today while sitting and reading my Sunday newspaper and the iPhone sitting on the arm of my chair and VERSA on my wrist the iPhone showed almost 13000 steps taken. I realize steps may be added due to arm movement but not to this extent. I'll be watching but feel something may be wrong with the unit, a gift from my daughter.Anyone else had this problem? Any fitbit masters have any ideas? Help and suggestions welcome. Thank you for any help.

I agree - that is way too many extra steps! Try restarting the watch a couple of times and see how it performs after that. If no better try a factory restart (settings app on the Versa and scroll down to About). If still no better you will need to contact Support. Let us know how you go

Advice that I see a lot on these forums is to restart your device "a couple of times" "multiple times" etc..

What does the second and third time of restarting it do, that the first time doesn't?

I had the same issue. Contacted support and was told that I have a "defective" Versa and it will be replaced. This issue seems to be in more than just a few units since there are so many posts. I'm extremely disappointed after paying $200.

Apparently, not enough. 😬

I have restarted 6 times over two days. Left off varying length of times all with no success. I have now used the factory reset 3 times over 3 days. Phantom steps still showing us. Still searching for an answer. Thanks for the suggestions,
