Steps vs Miles - inconsistent on Versa

I'm a seeing an inconsistency in milage vs. steps on my Versa. Example Wed, I walked 17,124 steps and it shows 8.64 miles. Thursday I walked 17,077 steps and its hows 7.33 miles. Is anyone else seeing this inconsistency?  Another example - 12,124 steps 5.29 miles, 13,453 steps - 5.2 miles.

Yes, I've seen this too.

I think there are two cases where this can happen. The first is down to walking speed. Fitbit uses two stride lengths: one for walking, one for running. It's possible that fast walking could be interpreted as running making it switch to a different stride length which, in turn, affects the distance.

The second thing is that there doesn't appear to be a simple calculation of distance = steps x stride. I notice that when I am out hiking that equation is pretty accurate but when I am just pottering around the house the distance can be smaller. It seems to adjust the calculation based on your activity as well as your stride and step count.

Although I don't fully understand what's happening I'm happy to assume that it knows what it's doing.
