Tracking sleep

I don't understand the sleep syncing.  I would like to wake up and look right at my versa to see sleep.  Since the sleep is coming from the watch itself you would think it would be up to date (just like steps are), but the only way I can see current sleep is the make sure the watch syncs to my phone first.  Is that how it is supposed to work?  Sees sort of backwards.

Though the sleep data is coming from the watch, I think it has to be analyzed back on Fitbit's computers to figure out stages.
