Versa counting steps while sleeping

Have my Versa for approximately a week now and woke up this morning for the first time to over 2000 steps taken and 700 calories burned already. Why does this happen and how can I delete this. This is really frustrating.

Hi, @Mar5095, the calories burned is normal -- these will be the calories your body has burned since midnight, just keeping itself alive (although you will have probably got a small number of extra calories from the false steps, it won't be many -- unless you are a very active person the majority of calories will be BMR calories: calories you burn just staying alive).

The extra steps could be caused in a number of ways.  If this is the same number of steps you had yesterday, it may be that for some reason the Fitbit did not reset as normal at midnight.  In this case, there is no way to delete those steps.

False steps can also come if the Fitbit is near a vibration source, such as a fan.  The vibrations are detected by the Fitbit and are interpreted as steps.  In that case you should be able see from your dashboard the time when those steps were added, and then the workaround it to log a "driving activity" during that time.  Logging driving is the only way to delete steps.  Instructions are here.  You will need to search for and find the built in driving activity and not create a custom activity, and you will also need to get the timing right in order to delete all the steps.

Whenever your Fitbit isn't behaving as expected you should perform a restart.  A restart will NOT delete extra steps, but it should ensure that everything is back to normal the following day.

I’ve read all the recommendations about steps counted on my Versa 2. I don’t see how it’s my problem that fit bit Versa 2 is counting my steps inaccurately. It show many more steps than actually taken. In fact, this morning it showed 92 steps before I got up.  Since Fitbit can’t solve the problem I will return it. I didn’t count on being a computer tech when I purchased it. Too much hassle. Wanted something that works without all the complications.

Hi, @SunsetRunner, obviously if you have decided to return your Fitbit then that is entirely up to you.  But it may be worth pointing out to anyone else reading this thread that 92 steps is less than one one thousandth (1/1000) of the daily recommended amount and very definitely well within Fitbit’s own accuracy range.

If you wake up with a significant number of “steps” on your wrist, that also can give you information you may be interested in knowing.  Every wrist worn tracker will, to some extent, count arm movements (especially particularly wide or vigorous movements).  If yu wake up with more than a few of these false steps, it can indicate that you have had an unusually active night, or were dreaming particularly intensively (especially if the dram involved physical activity).

For most people the point of a Fitbit is to be encouraged to get a little more active, to do a bit extra each day, maybe, and in that way to build or maintain fitness.

You definitely do not need to be a “computer tech” to benefit from a Fitbit, but, yes, if you spend a lot of time worrying about whether you have honestly done (for example) 10,200 steps or 10,500, then maybe a wrist worn device is not for you.

For myself, I feel the extra benefit of getting heartrate info, sleep tracking, workout/exercise tracking, not to mention notifications on my wrist (great when I am in my meeting and can’t really look at my phone), more than compensates for a few extra (even a few hundred extra - for most people that is only 2-3 minutes walking) false steps.

Maybe you would prefer a clip-on device that you wear on your body?  If so, you might want to consider the new Fitbit Inspire.

I hope this helps.  Welcome to the forums!

I have the same problem, my bracelet starts with 700 steps another hour 1000 steps, unfortunately a very bad product, I had a bracelet that cost 30 dollars, that worked perfectly, received WhatsApp calls, woke up and the next day there was zero steps, I had the bad idea of changing bracelets, I chose fitbit, LAST CHOICE, a product that costs 300 dollars but cannot reset or receive the WhatsApp call notification, if you want a watch that doesn't work properly and that you need to spend the most part of the time looking for solutions, this watch is called Versa2 by fitbit.

What did you have before? I just got my first Fitbit, and inspire HR and I'm wearing it on one arm and my cheap no name brand one from Amazon on the other. The cheap Amazon said 0 steps when I woke up... The Fitbit says 24. Fitbit tracked sleep better ( more detail and accurate) but other one is easier and less complicated for exercise, for sure. When I did a walk yesterday my old one recognized the mileage and my new one did not.

Imo they should release an update to allow us to delete steps in the app. This would be a very simple code to add as well. Please consider this fitbit.

Thank you

I woke up this morning with about 9400 steps and over 4 miles in distance after a solid 8 hours of sleep from midnight to 8 AM.  There was no record of the steps showing up on the bar graph as to when I might have taken them.  My guess is that 9400 steps is how many steps that MobileTrack counted for me yesterday when I was carrying my phone since overall my Flex 2 tracked about 10,100 steps for me and I was carrying my phone most of the day.  So I figure this error of counting 9400 steps while I was asleep was some kind of error where the Fitbit app didn’t reset properly at midnight.  So I logged a driving activity from 12:01 AM to 8:00 AM for today and my erroneous steps thankfully disappeared.  I then reduced the duration of this “driving” activity several times to see the effect.  I reduced it down all the way to one minute from 12:01 AM to 12:02 AM and all of erroneous sleep walking steps were still deleted.  Then I completely deleted the “driving” activity and the steps were still deleted which is what I desired.  I just wanted to share my experience in case it helps others.  This strange anomaly has only happened twice to me in 7 years of wearing a Fitbit Flex and then a Flex 2 every day.

Thanks for this tip! I have had an extra 5000 steps twice in the past couple of weeks both times between 5:30-5:45 a.m. I have never had it happen before and have been using a fitbit for many years.

I realized in my case that it was because I was wearing on my non-dominant arm. Once I switched to my right arm, it has tracked correctly.

Thank you for the steps insight. I usually wake up with under 50 false steps while sleeping. So whatever the "off count" is, I just get up and walk around the house without my Fitbit on until reaching those false steps.

Is any workaround released lately for the false steps and calorie counting during sleeping? It is super annoying.

None of the "fixes" work out for me. My solution is to write down my last recorded steps and subtract any additional ones added during the night in the morning assuming I'm not getting up during the night other than the bathroom, which I don't worry about such peccadillo steps as that.
