Have reviewed a lot of the posts, have tried all the suggestions, have had my IT dep look at it, but still versa really struggles to sync to my Huawei P20 lite
Seeing the number about of posts about versa not syncing leads me to believe the solution is to bring the watch back and get a refund - it just doesn't work

I think the refund is your best bet as that phone doesn't work with fitbits. They say:
"Due to Bluetooth issues that prevent certain devices, like Fitbit devices, from syncing, our products aren't compatible with the following phones:

If you have other devices then you can see if they are supported by fitbit at www.fitbit.com/devices
