I have the Huawei p20 lite and have heard they don't connect to Fitbits and I was looking to buy a Fitbit versa is there anyway I could connect it to my phone for example downloading an app to sort connection etc

I don't think that's an option. There seems to be a particular issue with Huawei "lite" phones that fitbit can't get round. They say:

"Due to Bluetooth issues that prevent certain devices, like Fitbit devices, from syncing, our products aren't compatible with the following phones:

• Huawei P8 Lite
• Huawei P9 Lite
• Huawei P20 Lite
• Xiaomi Mi 6"

Unless you have access to another device that is supported (see: www.fitbit.com/devices ) or a computer then I don't think fitbits are for you while you have that phone.

Great thanks do you know if I could use my laptop to connect to the versa instead

It depends. The manual says you need a mobile device to set up a versa but that you can also use the app with a windows 10 computer if it has a fairly recent bluetooth. See https://staticcs.fitbit.com/content/assets/help/manuals/manual_versa_en_US.pdf
