check messages while exercising

I believe we can't toggle to app if it's in exercise mode (which is kinda dumb). I know i can reply to the last message if i catch it right when it appears. However, if i missed it, there seems to be no way to get to it? Can anyone correct me if i'm wrong?

During your workout, press and hold the top right button, that will bring up the notifications screen. Scroll to the notification you want and tap it, there should then be a box that says reply.
