Hi @meielei, thanks for explaining why you would like to have the option to track skating activities with GPS option. I've moved it into a similar suggestion which has been updated as "Under Consideration". You can learn more about it here. I hope to see you around.
Hi! Skating as an activity is fine! Even more appropriated if crosscountry skiing could be an option as activity. We are a lot of people in the Nordic countries longing for tracking in our devices. And not only in the Nordic countries thousands of people in the snowy areas in central Europe too! Marcel
Added downhill and cross country skiing as an activity was first requested five and half years ago (Jan 2015) and so far it hasn't progressed past being under consideration.
This is absolutely woeful.
I have given up and bought a Garmin Fenix instead as have many (most?) others that have commented on here, so it it not a surprise than Fitbit are struggling as a company and look like being bought by Google.
That said, in many ways my old Fitbit was better than my new Garmin.
1. Heart rate is more accurate on the Garmin
2. Distance traveled is more accurate on the Fitbit when walking on narrow windy tracks mostly because Garmin just seems to join each coordinate by straight lines to calculate distance rather than using an algorithm to calculate the total CURVED distance.
3. The Bluetooth connection between watch and phone (Android in my case) seem much more stable with the Fitbit. Garmin keeps losing the connection and requires Bluetooth off/on on the phone to get it working again.
I would suggest that Fitbit need to add skiing activities AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
Hi, I have had a Flex, a Blaze and a Charge 4 throughout my years with Fitbit. It's been a great product. But it may be time to make a switch as it seems Fitbit management isn't concerned about their customers.
My number one sport is Alpine (downhill) skiing, along with 23 million other skiers and boarders in the US alone. Nordic (cross country) is next. For the last four years, I've had to use two concurrent iphone apps and then input their results into the Fitbit tracker manually.
I have watched the dialogue on skiing for the last four years. No progress. Not the slightest inkling by the part of Fitbit to do right by their customers.
Apple has come out with the Apple Watch 6, and it does track skiing.
@Fitbit !!! Can you PLEASE add the Ski-Tracking App? It was requested 5 years ago for the first time and is a big thing in Europe to buy a Garmin and NOT a Fitbit. This takes only a few Minutes to create this app and would give you tons of more custome
I don't think Fitbit is going to add winter activities ever. I've switched to Apple Watch a month ago and couldn't be happier. Looking forward to a good snow season ahead to try out Slopes - a snow tracking app for AW.
Hi! Thanks for your input. I hope it will help to get Fitbit to consider. I myself have tried both brands. Neither is perfect, and I still prefer my charge 3. Fitbit would win a lot in adding cross-country skiing. Best regards. Marcel
There isn’t any exercise option for skiing and ice skating so I can not track my distance. Yes i can use some other exercises for time but i would really like to see stats about my skiing/ice skating
Hi @krete, thanks for explaining why you would like to have the option to add skiing and ice skating to the exercise list. I've moved it into a similar suggestion which has been updated as "Under Consideration". I hope to see you around.
Dream on - it has been about 5 years since this was requested and there is still no action. Don't even bother trying to use a Fitbit while skiing - it thinks you are taking a leisurely walk around the mountain and only burning 100 calories an hour or so.
Most skiers, like me, have ditched the Fitbit and moved to other devices such as the Garmin range. That said, I have found my two Garmin devices to be somewhat inaccurate and unreliable - the heart rate monitor is very flakey, and the algorithm to calculate distance travelled doesn't interpolate curves, so when walking on windy tracks the distance can be as much as 20 percent less than reality. They really need to employ some better programmers!
I (highpeakshiker) made that original post to add skiing to Fitbit. I first has a charge hr and then upgraded to the Ionic. I loved the watch, except for the fact they never did have a skiing app. I had to replace that several months ago as the little pins on the back lost the plating so it would not charge anymore. Fitbit was no help with that. I switched to Garman Vivoactive 2. I haven't had the chance to ski yet so not sure how that will work. There is an app called Ski Tracks that I downloaded to my phone which tells, distance, elevation changes and speed. Mary
Hi Mary (@Highpeakshiker), There were a few original posts about adding skiing but I believe they all were merged together. I originally had a Charge HR (which didn't last very long before falling apart) and then a Blaze which I quite liked until the battery started dying. I did use the Blaze while skiing but as you would be aware Fitbits do a terrible job of tracking that activity. I too have used Ski Tracks and some other one that I can't recall the name of.
I first switched to a Garmin Vivoactive 3, but when using the GPS for an hour a day needed charging every two or three days, so I bought a Fenix 5 which I quite like except for the quite unreliable HR monitor. I have kept the VivoActive as a backup. Due to Covid19 I haven't had a chance to try the Garmin out while skiing. I prefer the Fitbit app to Garmin Connect and have found the Garmin hardware very good but the software somewhat buggy. Graham
I just got a Versa 3 for Christmas, and I’m really excited, but I would love to be able to log when I go skiing/snowboarding, which I do quite a bit during the winter.
