More in-depth sleep data analysis (eg impact of activity or HR on sleep)

Hi everyone!!!

Dear Fitbit,

it would be really nice if you could implement more functional sleep analysis. I ask/suggest/offer you to have a look at really interesting app (Sleep Cycle).  Sleep cycleSleep cycle

I am sure that a lot of Fitbit users would appreciate this kind of sleep information. Here you can see some examples but there is much more in it.

1 2 34 I am sure this kind of functionality would bring you more customers and more fun to Fitbit users. Thank you!!!

PS. I am really surprised you have not done it yet

That would be interesting to be able to overlay the heart rate and sleep/awake graph

I have found that it only takes notice of continous sleep patterns and even then not that well.

I sleept from around 11pm to 1am. Woke, got up, did night time awake things, went back to bed about 1:45. In the morning the app told me i'd had a 97% effective sleep from 1:45 to 6:00 and also a 99% effective sleep from 11 to 1. It didn't have any idea that i'd had a completely crappy night and felt like i'd been run over by a bus.

My second gripe with sleep is when I take the Surge off when sitting down playing computer games at night, it thinks i'm asleep and logs my purfectly still, restful sleep.

fitibt is seriously behind on sleep tracking, it is most important to me. I'd have got something better, but i have a windows phone...

It is nice idea!!!

This goes a bit into the direction of providing more detailled sleep data. But since reliable information on deep, light, REM, non-REM sleep requires insights into brain waves, a motion sensor device like a fitness tracker cannot provide any truly reliable data. However, sleep cycles and HR are related. Therefore, by being able to combine sleep and HR info in a single graph, it might be possible to make better educated guesses at sleep cycles. E.g. In REM sleep, the body is more or less paralyzed so the sleeper doesn't act out the dream experiences. Thus, trackers would most likely interpret this sleep as deep sleep due to the lack of movement. The HR, however, goes up during REM sleep. I.e. A combination of higher HR with no movement could indicate REM sleep. With both types of data in two separate graphs, it's very difficult, though, to draw any conclusions.

I would also like to see it.  Would be very useful with our medical situations.

Improve sleep tracking and the way it's presented, simple!  Jawbone and others do it brilliantly!  Please update this in the next firmware/app!

I would like to be able to see the sleep and heart rate data on a larger chart to get a better feel for when I am waking up.  The next item is that I would like to be able to overlay my sleep with my heart rate data.

Yes larger and clearer data would be good!  I like how on jawbone you can use your finger to scroll across your footsteps and heart rate, minute by minute.  On Fitbit you have to tap it isn't as nice to use.

I'd like to be able to create a sleep band for 10PM to 8AM where any paused activity in that range is assumed to be sleep.  This would save me from having to enter multiple sleep records every morning.  I'd rather delete a false record then enter a new one because deleting is easier.  Right now, the fit bit is choosing the longest sleep record or the last sleep record.  So I end up entering a sleep record each morning manually or two of them to post the earlier part of sleep.  Like, I go to bed between 10 and 11 but may get up at 2AM and then fall back asleep.  The fitbit is just showing the 2:30AM to 8AM sleep record as my sleep record when actually I had another sleep period before that.....   The sleep band range could be added to the dash board as something that can be set.  Then when the data comes over, from the fitbit, the dashboard or internal engine can interpret the data within the range etc....

I would love to be able to easily look at the times I'm restless during the night and when I wake up. I feel like I was able to look at that one time by clicking on it but haven't been able to do it since. It drives me crazy that I can't look at this stuff

Sleep tracking should be much better on fitbit, especially those with HR
monitor because that gives an even better indication of what kind of sleep
your in.

Happy they are expanding sleep detail. Would still like to see a better view of the time when episodes happen to see if it's consistent.

Another is heart rate during those episodes or average heart rate while sleeping. If the heart rate is always running, why not add just include it during sleep date.

From the charts, I see my heart rate between 37 and 43 while sleeping.

However, Fitbit reports a "resting" heart rate varying between 48 and 55, which I believe is either an average or when awake (resting but not sleeping).

Could we have the sleeping hear rate (in addition to the existing "resting" heart rate)?

People have a terrible understanding of resting HR. Sleeping is taken into account when calculating it. That's why Fitbit says, "For best results, wear your tracker to sleep"
TDA

Indeed, but that doesn't change my request: in addition to the resting heart rate (whose calculation is not the concern here), I'd like to monitor the heart rate when purely sleeping.

Can't you simply just look at it on your heart rate graph for the day?
TDA

Do you really not get it? Instead of looking at the graph everyday, guessing my average heart rate when only sleeping and recording it in Excel, I want FitBit to give it to me the same way it gives me the resting heart rate so I can quickly see a graph of my sleeping rate over time. So no, I cannot simply just look at it.

I was very disappointed to see this wasn't available in the reporting.  I exported the data to see if I could graph it myself but there is no HR data in the export.

We know you can do this fitbit - please make this available.

Thanks.

I concur that fitbit needs to combine heart rate with motion to effectively track sleep.  I often wake up at night, but I remain very still, because I'm trying to go back to sleep.  So the fitbit would have no idea I was awake, unless it noticed that my heartrate suddenly jumped from a sleeping rate to a "resting" rate.

I have watched my grandson wearing a pulse monitor over night, and so I know that each activity level has a different heart rate window.  I can tell if he is active, just laying there, or asleep just by looking at his heart rate.  Fitbit should be able to do the same!

This would be a valuable piece of information regarding sleep, restlessness, and heart rate.

The Surge allows you to track your HR like a normal activity while you are asleep. Fitbit Support have replied to me the Charge HR algorithm is different. I find during the day when I start my activity button on the Charge HR and the activity is low, the saved record finishes up in sleep.

When you change it back to an Activity record you lose all of you HR data. I'm sure that wasn't the intention.

Here is an image of the Surge sleep activity data which I set to Yoga..

Let's hope we have an answer from Fitbit.

Since Fitbit has access to a wealth of data, you could do a lot of data mining to determine what are some of the habits that's resulting in good sleep efficiency and lower resting heart rate. It could be the following:

1. Going to bed by 10am

2. Excercising at least 3 times a week

3. Walking X miles per week

4. Weight below x lbs

I came to the fitbit charge hr from the jawbone up. Their sleep tracking is so much better. I would like to see you come up with a software update comparable to theirs.
