Option to turn off step count (or add "Driving Mode") to avoid erroneous steps/floors

I just got home yesterday from a driving 6 hours in my car and I checked my Fitbit. I was really suprised to see it had given me almost 8,000 steps, 3.24 miles, 134 floors, & way more calories thank I burned while I was sitting in my car.  I looked on the forum to see how to easily delete the steps, miles, floors, and calories so my data would be accurate.  The only way people are fixing it is by manually logging the activity "Automobile or light truck (not a semi) driving" and entering in the duration.  I think that is a cumbersome way to fix the issue everytime I drive because I have to make sure I write down what time I get into and out of my car so I know the start time and duration.  And how does it automatically know the calories burned when everyone burns calories when they are sedentary at different rates.

I think they should add a "Drive Mode" feature that when turned on it won't add steps, distance, floors, & will only add calories burned equal to you sitting in a chair.

You could access the "Drive Mode" either on your Fitbit One or on your phone app to turn it on/off.  If you have a Fitbit One you could press the button till the "Drive Mode" icon appears then hold the button down for 2 seconds to turn it on or off.

On the phone apps you would just go to your device under "Account" and there you could turn it on or off.

You could also have the option to give you an alert when you unlock the phone that reminds you that it is in "Drive Mode" so you don't forget to turn it off when you get to your destination.  It would also be cool if you could use Siri to turn it on by saying "Turn on Fitbit Drive Mode" or "Turn off Fitbit Drive Mode".

Please add Driving as an exercise shortcut to the Charge 2

I agree, we need a driving mode. Mine counts so often when driving.

I returned mine for a refund and you know what....the girl in the shop had one and told me hers was the same.

Going away for 10 days touring on my motorbike so it would have been useless.

I'd buy another if they fixed this.

Hi,

I ride a motorcycle, and I know a lot of other users do as well.  When I ride my rides are consistently recorded as "outdoor bike", something I do not do.  I'd like a way to change this so that the default for an activity recorded as "outdoor bike" would instead be recorded as "motorcycle" or "driving", whatever is going to erase all stats for that period of time.  I know there are a few methods to get around this but frankly they're a pain.  Turning off the watch works until it restarts itself or I forget to turn it on, renaming an exercise to "driving" through my phone doesn't seem to work nor does it seem to work on the web app either, nor do I want to have to do that twice a day to zero out my commute.

I'd be willing to bet this idea would help others as well.  I'm sure someone somewhere is doing something that isn't recorded as the activity they are currently doing, and the recorded activity isn't something they normally do.  Seems like it should be an easy fix programatically.

Thanks for your time!  Other than that I like my Blaze a lot.  It lets me know just how lazy I really am.

I agree!  Truck drivers cannot take advantage of the Fitbit, and many would like to. Nice suggestion!

I took mine back after 2.5 days because for £130 I wanted accuracy this didn't provide that.

But if it was sorted I'd buy another.. ..

looking for a exercise category for the Surge (and ChargeHR) for Motorsports or Motorcycle riding that tracks only the Heart Rate (calorie burn) and NOT the Steps or Floors, Also editing after the inaccurately captured steps is affecting my weekly step count averages against friend counts.

I would like to be able to "pause" my Charge 2. I recently had ACL injury/surgery and as a result cannot be as active as I once was. It would be nice if the device would allow me to pause my activity/steps so that my daily averages would not decrease.

@stevebower, as for common activities in the app, tyese are auto populated based on the ones you use. So if you add driveng activities enough, driving will be added to your common activities.

I personally like tye suggestion @rainbow4abc points out.

I am a new Fitbit user. I've had this issue and have been looking through the forums for a solution. Found none that I was happy with, except this feature suggestion. Saw a moderator suggest in the forum to upvote this so that it gets traction.

To be honest, this is a very real problem to a lot of people. I don't think anybody needs to upvote this in order for it to get implemented. This seems to be an issue which makes the whole experience very undesirable. Most people would not sift through the forums, they would ditch the product (if they could). So upvoting aside, hope this gets fixed soon.

I'm brand-new to Fitbit and was really excited about it...but within an hour of first putting it on, this problem appeared. It's so obviously easy to solve through a manual "pause recording steps" type of feature that I thought I was just missing something. When I mentioned it to someone with a different tracker, she didn't believe that Fitbit could really work this way. But after 5 days, and lots of Internet searching and finding threads like this one, I've realized that somehow, Fitbit knowingly keeps shipping devices with this obvious flaw. I'm probably going to return my Special Edition for something that doesn't lie to me.

Pretty surprised this isn’t a thing yet, especially with how long ago this post was created. I think the simplest thing to do would be to add “Driving” to the available “Exercise Shortcuts”. It’s already recognized on the website and apps, so i’m confused as to why it hasn’t made its way to the device yet. I’d love to be able to simply click over to the exercise menu and start a driving session and end it when I’m done, so I’ll never have to see the massive amount of steps and flights I’ve taken while on something like an ATV.

If Pokemon Go can know when I'm driving and automatically put up a message, Fitbit can definitely know when we're driving (location information changing rapidly)

This feature is a no brainer and it's stupid that I get steps added when I"m driving

Yeah it is kinda scary how long this has been an issue. Looks like your pictures might help. Got my fingers crossed.

The problem with the exagerate count of steps and floors is well known from years, I don't believe you are going to solve it. You should at least make easier the registration of scooter activities into the panel
First, you could set the possibility to automatically consider as driving activity the activities performed in specific hours defined by the user (i drive to the office always at the same hours of the day).
Second, i consider whery peculiar the fact that floors and steps are not automatically cancelled if i rename the activity as scooter. So i am obliged to insert manually the driving activity, the starting hour, the date, the duration. I should at least able to select multiple activities registered on fitbit and mark them all as driving, with automatic registration of date hour and duration so limiting manual inputs of the use. This is something easy to implement for your developers and i consider really a MUST to do for you.
Waiting for a kind reply

Adding driving mode as an exercise shortcut is not a valid answer since it dtill has tge problem of manually adding a drive event.

It gets recorded as an exercise and then gets synced to websites like WW.

We really need a driving mode that simply suspends step counting.

Great suggestion! When can they get working on this??? I really dont know if I want to continue to use the fitbit if I have to keep deleting my improper steps every time I ride my motorcycle.

I have the same issue on my bike too. I too have called it to FitBit's attention. The issue was 3 years old when I did that. I'm convinced the only way it's going to be fixed is in some new piece of hardware they expect us to buy. The smart watch at the end of the year? Figure the odds!

When you say bike, I assume you mean motorcycle right?

I definitely think that it is a SW development resources issue. If Fitbit knew how many people were frustrated by this and looking at other options, I think they would implement this idea.

Actually it's a Trike but yes, motorcycle.

With 3 years of posting on THEIR board, we are only left to assume they don't care.

Yeah that seems like a huge bummer. I guess I will have to switch to some other fitness tracker. Dang.

Even if it’s difficult to make it an automated process, why haven’t we gotten an easier, more accessible manual process? I couldn’t care less about it automatically detecting of I’m Driving if I could start the exercise myself from my Charge 2 or the app without having to remember the times and log it later. I’m sure any competent worker could get this working in a day fin FitBit actually cared.

The car or scooter count of steps and floors is very frustrating for Fitbit Charge HR.

The Drivebit App is not the solution. I downloaded the App since 2 years ago. I have to remember every time I travel to enter the app, start and stop. If I forget, I have to remember when I traveled. This is not user friendly.

Fitbit should follow one of the following alternatives (in order of preference):

  • Improve the Smartrack of  to automatically detect the driving time
  • Or Allow the user to consider automatically as “driving time” the activity performed in certain hours of the day
  • Or Allow the user, after having registered multiple driving activities with the Fitbit button, to mark the activities as “driving” directly on the Fitbit Panel all in once without entering the starting and ending hours manually. Additionally, the possibility to mark as “driving” multiple activities registered in the panel through the Fitbit button should be enabled  (why it isn’t already possible?? It is a very easy change to be performed in your panel!!)

Seems time to QUIT FITBIT as no action taken even though so many comments in favour of suggestion has been coming on regular basis!! SAD to experience apathy from Manufacturer
