Option to turn off step count (or add "Driving Mode") to avoid erroneous steps/floors

I just got home yesterday from a driving 6 hours in my car and I checked my Fitbit. I was really suprised to see it had given me almost 8,000 steps, 3.24 miles, 134 floors, & way more calories thank I burned while I was sitting in my car.  I looked on the forum to see how to easily delete the steps, miles, floors, and calories so my data would be accurate.  The only way people are fixing it is by manually logging the activity "Automobile or light truck (not a semi) driving" and entering in the duration.  I think that is a cumbersome way to fix the issue everytime I drive because I have to make sure I write down what time I get into and out of my car so I know the start time and duration.  And how does it automatically know the calories burned when everyone burns calories when they are sedentary at different rates.

I think they should add a "Drive Mode" feature that when turned on it won't add steps, distance, floors, & will only add calories burned equal to you sitting in a chair.

You could access the "Drive Mode" either on your Fitbit One or on your phone app to turn it on/off.  If you have a Fitbit One you could press the button till the "Drive Mode" icon appears then hold the button down for 2 seconds to turn it on or off.

On the phone apps you would just go to your device under "Account" and there you could turn it on or off.

You could also have the option to give you an alert when you unlock the phone that reminds you that it is in "Drive Mode" so you don't forget to turn it off when you get to your destination.  It would also be cool if you could use Siri to turn it on by saying "Turn on Fitbit Drive Mode" or "Turn off Fitbit Drive Mode".

Honestly, enough with all the effort of the Community to solve the issue. These devices with have Connected GPS or onboard GPS. If it detects I'm traveling at > 25 mph, stop tracking steps.

It's not that hard.

I have the 4. It’s still a problem.

Yes, crazy this hasn't been addressed after so many years and requests. Accept the fact that user requests will be ignored by Fitbit.David

In regards to my statement about checking the GPS for speed, I had someone say that it would kill the battery to keep checking the GPS. I get that, I honestly do, and battery life is one thing I like about Fitbit devices...but....they have programmers.

  • Am I seeing a rapid step count?
  • Yes: is the person's HR elevated to a level that matches said step count?
  • --> Yes: keep on counting those steps
  • --> No: Check GPS for speed
  • Is watch traveling greater than 25 mph (let the user set this in case they bike)?
  • --> Yes: Do not count steps

....it's simple logic to follow.

This has been an ongoing issue and at this point I’m done with Fitbit. Done
and never looking back.
It’s a bracelet at this point for me. I’ve exhausted it’s features and it
doesn’t have anything to show

Yup. First and last Fitbit for me. I thought it was good to get something that did just what I wanted without the extra bells and whistles that I don’t want. But it’s no good at doing just the basics. Apple Watch for me next time.

There should be a "car mode" for all Fitbits. Car mode is essentially putting a "pause" on steps while driving or riding in a vehicle.

Hi @sierrawardx, thanks for explaining why you would like to have the option to turn off step count and use "Driving Mode". Thanks for sharing your feedback. I've moved it into a similar request.  A lot of users are asking for this option, I hope we receive updates soon.

@YojanaFitbit as it is six and a half years since this was first suggested and the status changed to reviewed by moderator, might I suggest that instead of just shunting these requests into this black hole, you actually review this again and bring it to the attention of someone who can act on it.

Absolutely. But fitbit will ignore this as they always arrogantly do. David

We need a button in the app- or better on the watch itself- that turns on driving/inactive mode. Where it will know I’m not walking no matter what movements. This is the biggest Fitbit flaw because I can never get an accurate step count - which is critical. The step count is decently accurate when walking for exercise. Terrible for Inactivity.

I really don't know why after all these years and requests these improvements are even sent on to fitbit, as they are always ignored and treated with arrogance!David

I didn't have time to read 61 pages of great ideas.  Are bikers still stuck with manually logging ride time to rm the false data?  I bought GPS-enabled device to give my wife a location pointer if I'm attacked on the trail or hit by a cellphone obsessed cager.  Do the maps still generate/remain if the log is manually entered?  We live in rural IL, so attacks by pack animals is a thing.

I am requesting a motorcycle/vehicle mode that will continue to track all other functions but steps and floors. Like press power for 3 seconds and then a car-mode option added to sleep and dnd.

Disable tracking during activities when Fitbit adds large amounts extra steps/ calories (ie driving).
I have already tried all of Fitbit's ridiculous proposed "solutions" and I see that people have been asking for this feature since before 2014. If accurate step/calorie counting was Fitbit's goal, they would take this suggestion seriously!

Ridiculous saying this will be put forward to fitbit. They have no intention of doing anything about incorporating what so many have requested David

you would think that if Apple can code an iPhone to know when the owner is driving that Fitbit could do it after, what, 6 years of asking??

Indeed you are correct. All such requests are just ignored. Arrogance!

A mode (like DND) to be able to pause the counting of steps until the mode is turned off. I have a Charge 4.

Is this a joke? It doesn't matter how many users requests are made for this, Fitbit will never sort this out. It has been asked for countless times over the years and is always ignored. David
