Access APIs directly from watch?

I am currently developing an app that requires the use of outside APIs. 

 

I am wondering if it is possible to use an API directly from the watch. Instead of writing the code for the API inside the companion app and transferring it to the watch for use, I want to know if it's possible to do away with the companion app and let the watch access the API through the phone's connection.

The only communication options you have are messaging and file transfer with the companion.
