Hi @samjg1 - if you have synced the watch, this is the default setting for the built-in AOD face and can't be changed.
Though a workaround, swipe down the watch face to get to Quick Settings and turn off all the icons except brightness [which may or may not work] then when you raise your wrist to see the watch it will show and at the same time you save battery.
If that doesn't fix it try changing the clock face.
