The top of the map shows me the correct distance, 4.8km. however, the map and pace splits show 2.9km. it is also uploading to Strava via auto sync or export and upload as 2.9km. Does anyone know why this occurs? It is happening on nearly every run, and no amount of factory reset / resync is helping

I have reported same issues , for both runs/rides its not reporting the correct distance or even altitude when compared to my Garmin devices ... distance on the top is correct but syncs to Strava incorrectly.. have you tried manually exporting the tcx and importing to Strava ?

I have. It uploads it as 2.9km instead of 4.8km. Very frustrating! I can deal with it being inaccurate a bit, say if it was 4.7 or something but it's missing half a run. Not good enough really.

When your run have started, do you have an notification card on your phone that shows fitbit exercise is active using "Connected GPS"?

Also, under Strava, have you tried to Correct distance/elevation to see if it correctly re-calculates the distance based on the route you took?  Splits/laps/total distance are separate entries from individual data points, so some summation error must have occurred.

I am not sure this is a Strava issue, as the Fitbit app itself shows 2.9km as well as the actual distance of 4.8.

This issue has been there for years. If you upload TCX file and recalculate distance based on GPS you'll find another different distance. Nothing is consistent (duration, distance, splits). Fitbit isn't platform made for runners.
