I've done the suggested steps listed. I get the "New message" notification on the Sense, but can't read the message. Also, cannot answer a call on it - get error. I have a Samsung S8, latest version, and have updated the Fitbit app.

Glad it is working. If the messages don't show on the lock screen, the phone isn't sending them to the Fitbit app.

@EG255 what phone do you have?
With iOS it is show preview
With android turn of Do Not Disturb and don't turn volume to zero.
