Elliptical machine for step counts?

Hello everyone I recently bought a treadmill and I’m returning it because it wasn’t working right. I’m thinking about exchanging it for an elliptical. Does an elliptical count steps? I liked the treadmill for the little time I had it because it was good to count steps and I can incline like if I was out on a hike. If the elliptical can’t count steps what do you recommend for a machine that would besides a treadmill?

Thank you

Keep in mind the device is on your wrist and detects step from the normal swinging of your arms while walking.  So anything with rhythmic arm movement will probably count as steps.  I haven't used an elliptical but expect you would get steps if it involves arm movement but not if no arm movement part to it, or if you rest your hands on frame.  Likewise treadmill probably does not register steps if you are holding hand rail instead of swinging arms.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
