The reliability of the watch and the phone app (Android) is poor. Force quitting the app and restarting the watch have become part of my daily ritual (perhaps it deserves a special badge 😀). When I do this features start working again. It's very frustrating and I'm looking forward to one hell of a set of updates!

On the phone check battery optimizations [the options may be different in your version]

And for good measure:
The shutdown the watch [hopefully for the last time!], restart the phone and place the watch on the charger to start it.
