Sometimes when I wake up during the night it takes a while to go back to sleep. This throws the sleep tracking off.
One night recently, I woke up at 4 AM. I didn't get up, but I reached for a book and read for a little over an hour, before falling back asleep at 5:20. Then I woke up at 7:30. My sleep log said I had slept for 1 hour and 10 minutes, ignoring the five hours I had slept before waking up at 4 AM.
Another night I woke up during the night, and again I was awake for over an hour, but I just lay awake mentally planning the day ahead. This time the sleep log showed that I had slept through the night without waking up at all.
Obviously, I don't think this is very reliable.

You should double check your sleep tracking. I had a split sleep one time and I had two separate entries.
As for your second scenario, if you laid still that whole time mentally awake, yes you'll fake out the sleep tracking to think you're still sleeping. It tracks by motion as it's not an EEG.
The Sense and pretty much all Fitbit devices are actually some of the most accurate sleep tracking devices out.
The Quantified Scientist tested it and others in comparison to an EEG.

I can't check for the split sleep register, as it was too long ago, but I'll keep that in mind.

Too long ago? How far back can you scroll back? I'm able to see all my sleep tracking since I've been using it December 29, 2021.
