The person who created the thread can choose the best answer as well as some others such as moderators. Users can only choose to mark a post as best answer for their own threads.

You can remove the best answer by clicking the "..." at the top right of the post in question and selecting "not the best answer". You can then mark an alternative post as best answer.

We are encouraged to mark best answers both because it helps people get to the answer quicker and it keeps the forums tidy

@SteveH I don't think it's true. I saw in my threads the best answer marked while I never chose one. I believe moderators may be doing it when they like.

@t.parker I think we are saying the same thing. People can mark best answer in their own threads but moderators and members of the community Council can mark best answers in any thread.

True. Somehow I misread your response.

@Sharz1 , you may want to mark SteveH’s post as Best Answer, since it answered your question.

I have seen M/C mark best answer even when the answer does not solve the problem for the community.  Why is that?

It's not about solving a problem for the community or changing the way things work, it's about answering the question posed by the thread author.

Without knowing the specifics, @down_and_out , I can only guess. Often, the “best” answer is the correct answer given the circumstances and hardware/software restrictions. It may not solve the issue. Music is one example. I’ve seen where a poster complains that the device should be able to store personal music. The fact of the matter is that the device cannot do this for hardware/software reasons. In a couple of the examples I’ve seen, the poster did not check out the details on the Fitbit Store page (and other places) prior to purchase, where it clearly says you can only play music (or download music, in some cases) if you have a paid subscription to Deezer or Pandora. In these examples, the best answer will remind the poster of that ... and the need to do your homework before making a purchase. Since neither the moderator nor the CC member can change the hardware/ software, presenting the facts of the case are all we can do.

But ... there have also been cases where the answer chosen as Best, is truly not the best. When I see that, I’ve been deselecting the answer as Best, and selecting another answer, if one meets the Best criteria. You are always welcome to post, saying you disagree with the selection.

Hope you understand. We are all doing the best we can. In the case of the CC members, we do not work for Fitbit and are not paid by them. We are volunteers, just trying to keep the forums organized and helping out where we can. In some cases, we are managing expectations, based on available facts and restrictions.
