It should automatically detect when you are sleeping.
You can download the manual here and it can help

A warm welcome to the Fitbit Community @hotshot! Just like @WendyB said Surge automatically track your sleep. Simply wear your tracker to bed. When you wake up, sync your tracker to see last night's sleep stats on the dashboard. If this is not working, try to restart your tracker and give it a try again.
Give it a shot and let me know if that works!
