The brightness is an issue. Barely readable, and no adjustment setting...and the manual says that there is one.

If you are referring to page 26 of the manual, that only deals with when does the display go on, not the actual brightness. Note, it refers to "brightness" in the settings but that is just change when it displays.

Your Surge is an Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that does not produce any light and requires an external light source. 

The advantage is that it is very readable in the sun. The design is suppose to work more like paper. 

If the face is easily read in bright light, it is working correctly. .
