The calories you are seeing are most likely your basal metabolic rate (BMR) calories. Based on the height, weight, age, and gender you enter into your account, Fitbit calculates the calories you burn during the day just by being alive. It sets this to a constant rate over the day by dividing the total by 15 minutes, the segments you would see if you look at a plot of your calories. Then, over the day, it adds these calories on, even while you're asleep. When you exercise, Fitbit adds those calories burned to your BMR calories.

@MakMak that's totally true! @Morris65 if you feel that the calories you're getting are not accurate, I recommend taking a look at your account settings, if you're happy with the information entered, then your calories are fine.
Hope this helps.

Sorry if I'm hijacking your post but I bought a fitbit surge on Friday and my calories are definately too high. I've used a charge HR since January and its been reasonably challenging to achieve my 2900 daily target but now with the surge 4000 is easy. This can't be right. I've been entering all my food intake since Jan and my charge calories would seem about right as I'm eating approx 1900 per day with my target at 2900 and I've lost 2stone (13kg) in weight (in 3 months). Now all of a sudden with the new device my used calories has jumped up significatly from Friday!!
Is there a way of recalibrating the device?

Hey there @stockie12! I'll be happy to help you with this, besides your heart rate, your Surge also uses your personal information. The first you need to do is check it, you can do this by going to your Account Settings. If the information is correct, make sure you're not manually logging activities. This could duplicate your amount of calories burned.
Keep me posted!

I'm getting way too high calories, too. My Flex will give me ~50 extra calories in MyFitnessPal. A very similar day will give me ~450 extra calories with the Surge. I wore the Flex for several months without changing weight. This suggests that the extra 400 calories from the Surge are incorrect.

Hello there @zps! I'll be happy to help you with this. Your Fitbit tracker measure your calorie burned based on the personal information you enter when you create your account. So I recommend making sure your information is correct. You can check this by going to your Account Settings. Flex tracker measures your calories based on your activities, your Surge, besides your activities, also uses your heart rate to measure your calories burn.
Hope this helps.
