I used my Surge yesterday for the first time to record a hike. When I got home and viewed the hike on Strava, I could see that it tracked very well and the data was very useful. However I would like to see some info whilst on the actual hike. For example, to aid navigation I would like to see my current altitude at any given time, floors climbed is a pointless metric. The surge has a GPS chip onboard which does pull altitude data. Some will say that this is never accurate, however I would argue that it doesn't need to be accurate to the nearest meter. I'm quite happy having it 10/20/50 meters out as it is only there to be used to aid navigation and guide you to where you might be whilst using an OS map.
Meters ascended and decended is also another handy metric to include. As I'd like to see how hard I've worked and whether I should push for another climb, if, for example I had a certain target in mind.
These are very basic metrics to include and something which fitbit can do given the current hardware onboard. Garmin are just about to release their new Fenix watch which at £450 is very expensive, however hikers will buy it because it gives them what they need. If Fitbit want to steal some share from the likes of Garmin and Suunto, they should consider the metrics specific to each exercise to make them worth purchasing.
Hopefully we'll see an update soon... Thoughts from hikers welcome
