Inaccurate HR rate while on cardio machines

I note a similar effect. I hold the handles of the machine and have my Surge fitted properly. (Please note that I have run a couple of thousand kilometres with the Surge and know how to wear it.)

At low intensity, say HR= 120, both my Surge and the machine read about the same. At fairly high intensity, the machine says my HR= 170 while my surge reads only 130. I am well familiar with my own fitness and body responses. At this intensity the elliptical machine reading feels correct. My surge reads very much lower than my real heart rate.

I have tested this on three identical elliptical machines. I do not see this effect when on a treadmill and I don't hold the HR monitor connection points there anyway. On an outdoors run the Surge reads correctly and compares well with a chest band device.

Update: After applying the latest firmware update for my Surge the indicated heart rates for the Fitbit and the cardio machines are much more consistent. Up to about 155 BPM all is good. When I put in a sprint finish with heart rates up to 180 the Surge fails to recognise the increase, while the cardio machine shows a correct indication.
