Innaccurate and low HR during workouts

Long time Garmin user and fitness enthusiast.  I bought the Fitbit Surge to free myself from wearing a chest strap to monitor HR.

Well, I'm not impressed.  The HR monitor in my surge has been inconsistent, widely varied and usually well below my actual HR when exercising.  I think it does a pretty good job of resting or if I'm only walking, but anything vigorous and it's almost worthless for HR monitoring.

Fitbit recommends wearing high on your wrist but this is literally impossible if doing excercise.  Ever heard of sweat?  And unless your forearms are shaped like Popeye's, your fitbit will slip down to the narrowest part of your wrist.
