I used my surge on a bike tour with GPS turned on. It worked quite well. Unfortunately we missed a turn and became lost. I always have my android phone with me. Is there a way to see a map of where I am out where we have been to determine which way to go next? This was out in a very unpopulated area so there was no one around to ask for directions.

Given you have an Android phone, that can use it's own GPS for displaying your position on a map. As Wendy says, there are quite a few apps to do that on any platform so go and check the app store for your device.
The Surge GPS is used by the Surge only to track your exercise. It doesn't export your current position data to the phone.
