Pace info displayed on Surge

Can someone provide insight on the diiferent pace reporting stats on my Surge? When i am doing a free run, does is pace, my average pace for my run, my instantaneous pace, pace for the last mile, or something else? Again at each mile does the summary pace and HR reflect my 1 mile average or overalll average? Do these features change with lap run? Lastly, I was a bit stunned to read that pace is reported based on an analysis of stride length, number of strides, and time, when my Surge is collecting GPS data. The accuracy of the stride calculation may be better over very short distances, but I would think GPS data would trump this accuracy for most runners, even those that measure their stride. This, in my view, is because I see my own stride length vary if i am running up a hill, down a hill, on a sandy beach, on a trail, or on a track. Can anyone confirm this is really the approach the Surge uses to calculate pace? Overall distance uses GPS, right?

Hello @SunsetRunner, welcome aboard to our Community. A good way to start addressing your questions is using the article @SunsetRunner shared before.

Now note that not all the exercise on your Surge has the ability to use the GPS feature. In these instances is when it comes to play the stride length to measure your distance based on your amount on steps. Indeed this stride length distance vary depending of the terrain where you are running is for this reason you can find different type of exercises as Free Run, Lap Run, Walk and Hike.

Now the pace wont change based on this, as this will be measured in general depending of the effort you put on each exercise and the time it takes to complete 1 mile or kilometer. This wont be influenced by any of the types of exercise mentioned before.

Let me know if there are more questions, see you around.
