Hi there @climbwave. Welcome to the Fitbit Community! 🙂
You're totally right. Your Fitbit Surge shoyld automatically record your sleep without you having to press any button or any other type of mechanism. The sleep tracking for your Fitbit Surge as well as for the Charge HR, Charge and Flex works based on Autodetection.
Autodetection is based on your movement. When you haven’t moved in over an hour, algorithms assume that sleep has begun, which is confirmed by the length of time your movements are indicative of sleep behavior only (rolling over, etc). Morning movement tells your tracker that you’re awake. If you’re not moving but not asleep for long periods of time it’s possible for your tracker to falsely record sleep, in which case you can delete the sleep record from your dashboard. (For more information about sleep tracking, you can take a look at this article.)
I'd recommend restarting your tracker. By doing this, any setting that is not working appropriately should be corrected. You can see the instructions on how to restart your tracker by clicking here.
After doing this, give your Surge a try the night after and see how it goes.
Hope this helps and if you need any more help, just let me know!
