Surge Smart Track - issues?

My Surge doesn't seem to tracking my exercise properly using Smart Track.

I play Field Hockey and usually track my matches manually using the 'workout' option but I've forgotten to press that recently but yesterday I thought 'it's okay, it'll Smart Track it'.

I played a 70 minute game of hockey yesterday, including a 20 minute warm-up, and a few sections of 8-10 mins when subbed off the pitch or during half time - but still would have been moving around and heartrate still up a bit.

My Surge didn't Smart Track ANYTHING! I was seriously working hard - when I track using Workout my heart rate would usually max out at 160-170, and average 130 bmp in a match, with 7000-9000 steps.  How can Smart Track not be picking that up?  Could there be a problem with my Surge?

Hi, @Ems77, you will need to check your SmartTrack settings to see how long a workout needs to be in order to be tracked.  I am not sure whether it would track your activity as an aerobic workout or a run-- I would say run is more likely.  Either way, the periods when you were subbed out are unlikely to count, even if your HR was "up a bit" and you were still moving around.  So it is possible that each individual session when you were actually on the pitch might not have been quite long enough to meet the minimum threshold (depending on your settings) for a run (or possibly aerobic workout).

Thanks Julia. My setting are that it picks up anything over 10 mins. I was on the pitch for 20 minutes before I was subbed and was working really hard. What you're saying makes sense but I've had a FitBit since the beginning of 2015; a Charge HR, and then followed by this Surge which I've had for 15 months. I know they should Smart Track a hockey match as they have done in the past.

I've attached a picture of what I generally get when I track a match using 'workout'. How can it be possible for my Surge to not Smart Track something like that? This is why I'm confused!

Maybe I need to try resetting my Surge?

Well, as many people have noted, SmartTrack is pretty good, but it isn't 100%.  In this case the best plan would be to create a manual log of your exercise.  This will capture what your Surge detected during the time period, so you will see your heart rate, steps  etc.

Going forward, it is always a good idea to give your Fitbit a restart if it is not behaving as expected.  Then keep an eye on it and see if it is mostly picking up your activities as before.

Thanks Julia - you're right - a reset usually helps most things!

Manual logging is the way forward until I remember to track it properly!
