Why not have a daily calorie target as the main goal? I got fed up with cycling recording steps and distorting that but by having a calorie goal all exercise and even laying around is counted. I set mine at 3000, which with a BMR of around 1750 means it's easy a 5 mile walk or 25+ miles on the bike to get near it.

It's a fair point though - I guess I hadn't worried about that side. I cycle every day and use the Polar app (with a chest strap for decent HR capture) and that gathers totals of time, distance and calories, and best distance, speed, avg pace etc.

Any fitness apps will track you, you don't have to use a chest strap either but its more accurate than the Surge and if I mount the phone to the bars I dont have to move my wrist to see the info every time. Lots of good apps out there - just do a seach but Strava, Endomondo, MyFitnessPal, MapMy RIde to name a few...
