Surge turns off when using GPS

When using the GPS on my Surge for a run yesterday my screen went blank an hour into my run; it like my Surge turned off, pressing the buttons did not bring it back up. The same thing happened again today when I used the GPS on a 30 min. walk. Both times the battery was charged. Each time I plugged it into the charger when I got home and within a couple of minutes it was back. Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?
