Surge undercounts steps on NordicTrak

In cold weather, instead of walking outside, I often work out on my NordicTrak.  When walking, I get about 1000 steps per 10 mins of walking, and I figure it should be about the same on the NordicTrak (using the Elliptical setting, since that is the closest I could find).  That is sometimes the case, but at least half the time steps are underrecorded, only about 1/4 to 1/2 what they should be.  Sometimes stopping the count and restarting fixes the problem, but not always.  There is no difference in what I am doing on the NordicTrak.  How can I get it to record steps accurately all the time?  I think this may have to do with a recent upgrade, since this has been a problem only in the last few months.

Not sure which Nordic track you are using.

But your stride is different so it will not be the same as walking outdoors

It is the original NordicTrak, purely mechanical.  The real issue here is that it records steps inconsistently -- sometimes I get (say) 2,900 steps for 30 mins, other times 350.  There is little if any difference in my speed.
