I bought a Surge on 3/4, it says it is water resistant on fitbit's site, it says it recommends to take it off when you shower for your skin's sake, NOT because it is in fact not resistant to the water in a shower. I showered with mine and got water in the screen that won't come out with rice. The screen no longer works! Fitbit's email support offers me 25% off a new one because water in the screen in the first 30 days due to a shower is not covered in their warranty!!! Really fitbit - you are not supporting what you say about your own device on your own website (see below!) I think I will just buy a Samsung smart watch and report this to the BBB instead since what your website says and what your support people says are not exactly the same and at no point on your website do you say you CAN'T shower with the Surge - update your specs and stop ripping people off!
What your website says (notice - you recommend taking it off for my skin not because it can't take a shower but can play in the rain!):
• Water Resistance
Fitbit Surge has been tested up to 5 ATM meaning it is sweat, rain and splash proof. However, the device is not swim proof. We also recommend taking Fitbit Surge off before showering because, as with any wearable device, it’s best for your skin if the band stays dry and clean.
What your support people say about your product – notice the difference??? They say it is in face not waterproof enough for a shower - very different from what your website says - FALSE ADVERTISING!
Unfortunately the issue with your tracker isn't covered by Fitbit's limited warranty. To help keep you in the Fitbit family and working towards your goals, we'd like to give you a 25% discount towards the purchase of another tracker. For more information about our warranty policy, please visit http://www.fitbit.com/returns.
Please reply and let us know if you'd like to receive the discount. If so, you'll receive a separate email with a link you can click any time in the next 30 days to shop fitbit.com. The discount is automatically applied at check out.
Note: All Fitbit trackers are water-resistant, which means they are rain-proof and splash-proof and can stand up to even the sweatiest workout.
Do not swim or shower with your tracker. Though a little water won't hurt the device, wearing it 24/7 does not give your skin a chance to breathe. Whenever you get your tracker wet, dry it thoroughly before putting it back on.

Welcome to the forums @TheresaPrice! I wanted to check if you are still encountering a problem with your Surge?
Regarding your question, the Surge is not designed to be worn while swimming or showering. It shouldn't be harmed by splashes or rain, but we do not advise submerging the tracker underwater.
As the specs page correctly states, Surge is tested to a pressure level of 5 ATM. I understand that this pressure rating might be confused with validation of underwater use, but please remember that these are two separate statements. ATM testing is only an indication of resistance to water pressure, and is not a test of the longtime exposure or conditions involved with swimming. While the other companies you've mentioned may use this rating to suggest their products are "swim proof", the two concepts are only correlated - it's not an industry-standard interpretation of that ATM rating.
In regards to showering or submerging the device, our messaging is focused around helping keep your tracker clean and dry to avoid any discomfort, as described on our product care page.
Fitbit is dedicated to presenting accurate technical specs, as well as clear expectations on how the tracker is meant to be used. The rating you see on the product page is correct, and we will be bringing additional instructions to that page to elaborate on suggested usage, to help answer questions and alleviate confusion.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions
