step count accuracy questions

I have had a Fitbit Surge for a week and the step count accuracy seem to be off, too low.  Several times while walking on a treadmill the mileage walked on the treadmill is greater than the recored mileage on the Surge.  Most recent example is 2 miles on the treadmill (30 min at a 4 mph pace) was recorded on the Surge  as 1.54 miles and 3281 steps.  I have measured my stride length and it is 30" normal walking.  2 miles with a 30" stride is 4224 steps, not 3281.  This is almost a 25% difference.  In order to adjust my stride lenght to equal 2 miles at 3281 steps (the Surge recorded number) my walking stride would have to be 39" which is not reasonble for a walking stride..  How do I adjust the Surge to achieve a more accurate step?  The stride length is set to 30 inches and the Surge is on my non dominate arm.  I know the treadmil is accurate because it is time x pace = distance.  Step count and stride length have no bearing while walking on the treadmill.  Thanks for any input.

Hi, my surge seems to record very low steps too compared to friends with Charge HR. I record about a 400-600 deficit from a 2k walk in comparision to iphone step counter which i hold in my other hand. When i tested it i lose about 20 steps for every 100. Very frustrating!

I'm surprised there has not been more response to this problem.

@Billmc52 Welcome to the Fitbit Community! I recommend performing a restart on your Surge (check @SunsetRunner's steps on that post). Also, I recommend to manually log the treadmill activity to get more accurate data (check @GisselleM's steps). I left a picture below showing how it looks on the online dashboard.

@amz101 It's great to see you in the Community! I recommend adjusting your stride length which helps with accuracy overall (check link at @SteveH's post). Also, set your dominant hand setting to "non dominant" as it increases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any under counting of steps. Also, do the restart following the instruction on the link I put in above.

Let me know how it goes! Smiley Happy
