what is considered a 'very active minute'?

Yesterday my Surge recorded that I was continually "active" between midnight and 1 pm - and that I used up a massive number of calories during this time.  As I spend a large part of the time in bed asleep, and most of the rest shopping I suspect that it was not recording correctly.  Why?  And what can I do in order to correct my log?

"Very active minutes" are earned while doing cardio workouts and high intensity activities like jogging and running. Note that your active minute count will be lower for activities that are not primarily step-based, such as weight lifting, cycling, and rowing.

All Fitbit trackers calculate very active minutes using metabolic equivalents (METs). MET is a unit used to represent the amount of oxygen used by a body during physical activity; therefore, MET can be used as an indicator for intensity of physical activities. For example, a MET of 1 indicates a body at rest. Active minutes are earned for all minutes above a certain MET value based on the thresholds we have established. Simply put, active minutes correlate to a greater amount of activity over the course of 60-second intervals.

Thanks for the explanation about METs.  Interesting but does not answer the question.

Last Tuesday my Fitbit recorded that between 12:15 and 12:30 am I had 10 active minutes and used 55 calories.  Then, every 15 minutes between 12:20 am and 1:00 pm I apparently had 15 active minutes and used 73 calories.  For 7 hours of this time I was in bed asleep - and during the morning I was shopping.  So I conclude that the date collected by my Fitbit during this time was rubbish.  Why did it do this - and how do I ammend the data in my log?

Check to see if it was recording a high HR at these times too.  That might be the explanation, but not I'm afraid something you can do much about.

I have checked the HR record for the 'offending period', but it is normal.  Give or take it is the same for as my HR on other days.  So - notwithstanding that my heart rate was at the right level for someone sleeping, my activity record shows that I spent the time being highly active.  Makes no sense, but I guess that there there is no logical explanation and nothing I can do about it!!
