Hey Fitbit Community,

Pixel Watch 3 introduced a first-of-its-kind capability — Loss of Pulse Detection — which can detect loss-of-pulse events which occur when the heart suddenly stops beating.1 It can affect people of any age and be due to a wide range of problems inside or outside the heart, such as primary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose or poisoning.2

Loss of Pulse Detection has received U.S. FDA clearance, and is now available on Pixel Watch 3. The feature is already available in 14 countries, U.S. availability is scheduled to begin in late March.

Note: Loss of Pulse Detection is currently available in 14 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Check this link for availability updates. Additional countries will be added as regulatory clearance is obtained.

To enable Loss of Pulse Detection on your Pixel Watch 3, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that your Google Personal Safety app is up to date.
  2. Open the Google Pixel Watch app on your phone.
  3. Tap Safety & emergency.
  4. Tap Loss of Pulse Detection.
  5. Complete the setup flow to Turn On Loss of Pulse Detection.

Once enabled, your Pixel Watch 3 works in the background to detect a potential loss of pulse event while you're wearing your watch.

If a loss of pulse event is detected, it triggers a check-in to see if you're okay. If you don't respond, it will start to play a loud sound and escalate to a countdown.

If you don’t respond during the countdown, Loss of Pulse Detection can automatically prompt a call from your wearable device or connected Android phone to emergency services and share an automated message with critical context, along with your location.1 This can be especially impactful and potentially lifesaving for people who experience a loss of pulse alone and are unable to call for help themselves.

1 Loss of Pulse Detection may not detect every instance of a loss of pulse and is not intended for users with preexisting heart conditions or those who require cardiac monitoring. It does not diagnose or treat any medical condition or provide follow-up care. Emergency calling is dependent on call functionality such as your phone or watch being charged and having adequate cellular connectivity.

2 Primary cardiac arrest is due to a heart problem (such as arrhythmia, heart failure, etc.).
