@DocS44, the Fitbit app is free, and you can download and use it without buying any Fitbit at all. As you have noted, it is free to use on iOS, Windows or Android. However, there is no reason why they should develop their free app to work with a competitor's wearable product. If you want a mobile tracker to work with the Fitbit app, you need to buy a Fitbit!

I think we all understand the app itself is free. However, I would be willing to pay the annual $50 premium fee (or more) to have the ability to challenge friends and record my steps. The current premium function does not have this ability

@US-757, that is not the business model that Fitbit have chosen. You can participate in a challenge without purchasing a Fitbit (using MobileTrack on the free app), but you can't participate in a challenge using a competitor's product.
