Running apps and the Charge HR

Hi all,

So, if this is a stupid question I'll apologise in advance but...

I have just got the Charge HR. With the HR functionality it would make sense to use this as my running app, right? That way I can get a full idea of burn and achievement?

I know I'd lose the GPS but I can use any old unlinked app for that.

OR do you still use a third party app? If so how does the HR montior combine to show burn?

I'm not sure if that adds any benefit. Pressing the button for 3 seconds puts the wristband into activity mode. I use this for activities like stationary bike, lifting, treadmill, etc. If your Charge HR is connected to your phone via bluetooth, once you start the app on your phone , tap 'track your exercise", then tap the little stopwatch at the upper right corner, make sure it is on 'tracking' and not "log previous" then tap the red start button and begin. Once finished, tap the finish button a d follow the directions. This is for the Android app. Not sure if it is the same on iPhone.

Hello Matthew and welcome! If I am understanding your question, all you are looking for is the GPS integration right? If so, you can download and use the Fitbit app. It would accomplish the same thing as the other apps (Runkeeper, Strava, Mapmyrun, etc) but keeps all of the data in one place. This provides a map with your run based on the geo-points from your phone's GPS.

Hey there!

Thanks SO MUCH I had no idea there was a GPS running element built in! Excellent!
So I guess the only question is ... do I need to activate the wristband (i.e. press for 3 seconds to tell it I'm running) ...

Appreciate you getting back to me. I'm excited about joining the fitbit community, really want to make a go of getting in shape before I turn 40 in 15 months.

Hey @acerda thanks for that, it is clear now how this works now. I thought I had to use the '3 second button' for all exercise in order to track but what your saying makes it clear. Really appreciate you getting back to me. Looking forward to it's first full day tomorrow.

Any time. As I understand it, using the app for running, walking, rowing, cycling etc tracks in real time whereas using the 3-second button reserves that block of time recorded with the button to be allocated to an activity after that activity is completed. It takes all of the analytics from that block of time as assigns it to whatever activity is specified for that block of time. I use the app if I am moving from one to to another and the button if my exercise is pretty much in one place. Last weekend I was moving a few hundred landscaping concrete blocks which my neighbor gave me from his house to mine. Since I was going to exert a great deal of effort and burn a lot of calories, I used the button to record it as lifting. The real time tracking on the app would have worked as well but the map would have looked like a bunch of scribbles and the pace would not have reflected the true exertion if I used the app. Hope this helps.
